Ajat Woven Rattan Basket Penan People Tribal Art Borneo Antique

Ajat Woven Ratan Basket Borneo, a handwoven rattan gathering basket featuring bold geometric motifs rendered in alternating light and dark brown fibbers for the body work. The base is constructed of a separate circular panel. The diagonal plaited weave creates a tight, flexible structure with a balanced cylindrical form. Basketry vessels of this type, often referred to as Ajats, were traditionally worn as backpack carriers with attached straps. The rim is finished with a series of plaited loops, through which a cord is threaded.
